Dinner… 100ft in the sky

Dinner at Chewton Glen – a five star dining experience in the heart of the New Forest. Think cosy fires, exquisite roast dinners, endless glasses of prosecco…

But what happens when you challenge the Chewton Glen chefs to recreate that 100ft up in the air?

Events in the Sky is a unique company who produce the most amazing experiences all up in the air. A platform with a rectangular dining table and chairs attached round the outside is suspended from a crane 100ft in the sky.

I was invited to go along to Southampton in the Sky for dinner where Chewton Glen chefs worked incredibly hard to provide us with a 4 course meal with limited space and resources.

You’re strapped into your seat with 3 seatbelts and reassured that it’s all very secure (much to my relief). The crane then slowly starts lifting you up into the air with panoramic views of Southampton appearing above nearby buildings. I have to be honest, I was holding onto the table from the minute we left the ground to the minute we touched down! While one hand was firmly clutching the edge, the other was firmly clutching a big glass of wine…

Once you’ve settled into the bizarre experience of having a 4 course meal while your legs are dangling in mid-air, it’s actually an incredible feeling. The wind makes the platform spin round slowly so you get 360 views of wherever you are, and as the sun sets, you realise how amazing this experience really is.

The food was divine. Stream trout with avocado purée, a posh duck sausage roll, ox cheek with creamed polenta and a chocolate and caramel tart for dessert. The only struggle was to make sure my hair didn’t blow in my mouth while taking a mouthful of spiced apricot and sloe gin jus!

I personally avoided looking down until I’d had at least 3 glasses of Sauvignon Blanc, and taking photos is quite a precarious activity as, obviously, your phone could drop to the floor with one fatal slip. My friend actually managed to lose her napkin!

Overall, this truly is a unique experience. There is literally nothing else like it. Eating an exquisite meal in mid-air with the wind in your hair and the ground 100ft below you. Book your tickets now because this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and you will not regret it.
