Hold a plate of mezze in front of me and I will be putty in your hands. I bloody love the stuff. Falafel, halloumi, olives, tzatziki, houmous, kofte, pitta bread, and my absolute fave, dolmades. I nearly wet myself with joy when I was invited to the launch of The Real Greek, another restaurant joining West Quay’s new development.
With a picture of Santorini splashed on the back wall, The Real Greek makes you feel like you’ve walked into an independent, family-run Greek restaurant from the minute you walk in. There’s a selection of both cold mezze and mezze from the grill (small dishes a bit like tapas that you get to share!). Make sure you try the lamb kebabs – they were divine, and the grilled halloumi is beautiful too. The only thing I despise with small dishes is how they cover every inch of table surface area so you’re forever dipping your sleeves in, well… dips. But the genus of The Real Greek is that they stack them on elegant metal stands, slightly obscuring the face of whoever you’re eating with, but houmous or my boyfriend’s face? Houmous.
It’s a lovely place to have a date night or a chilled evening with friends as it’s relaxed, cosy and the focus really is on the food. Definitely check it out. The Real Greek is open now and you can book a table here: http://www.therealgreek.com/southampton/
